Al Shindelar, 87, of Greenfield

Celebration of Life Services: Will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2025, at the Lamb Funeral Home in Greenfield at 11:00 a.m.  Father Phillip Bempong will officiate the service.   The Lamb Funeral Home in Greenfield is in charge of the professional arrangements. Family Visitation:  The family will greet friends at the Lamb Funeral Home in Greenfield on Saturday, October 18, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Al Shindelar Memorial.

Our dearly loved father Aloysius “Al” Celestine Shindelar sadly passed away at home on July 29, 2025, at the age of 87. Al was a devoted husband and beloved father. He had many friends and was a well-loved member of the community in Greenfield, Iowa.

Al was born on May 19, 1938, to Albert and Helen Shindelar at their home in Calmer, Iowa. He graduated from Calmer High School in 1956.

In 1959, Al and Fran met at Matter’s Ballroom in Decorah, IA. They were married at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Plymouth Rock, IA., on a beautiful autumn day on October 15, 1960. They had four children, Michael, James, Dianna and Nicole. Al was a beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Al was a devout believer in Jesus Christ, and his faith was a driving force in his life. As an Agricultural Engineer Al spent twenty-eight plus years working at John Deere’s Engineering Center located in Waterloo, IA. Shortly after retiring from John Deere, Al and Fran moved to Greenfield to be closer to family. There he started his second career as an established cabinetmaker/carpenter. Al’s hobbies included fine woodworking and bird photography.

Al was preceded in death by Frances “Fran” (wife), Albert (father), Helen (mother), Albert Jr. (brother), Frances (sister), Marie (sister), Anselm (brother), Cyril (brother), Joseph (brother), Richard (brother), Teresa (sister) and brothers and sisters-in-law. He was survived by Gertrude Holtaus (sister), Helen Zbornik (sister), Michael and Elyse (son and daughter-in-law), James and Angie (son and daughter-in-law), Dianna and Martin Mitchell (daughter and son-in-law), Nicole and Erik Borchardt (daughter and son-in-law), grandchildren Whitney, Dillon, Kolton, Kallin, Isabel and Gunnar, and great-grandchildren Roland, Porter, Aurora and Oliver.
