Graveside Services: Will be held on Thursday, September 24,2020, at 10:00 a.m. at the Greenfield Cemetery. Pastor Melinda Stonebraker will officiate the service. The Steen Funeral Home in Greenfield is in charge of the professional arrangements.  

Open Visitation: Will be held on Wednesday, September 23, 2020, at the Steen Funeral Home in Greenfield from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. 

Family Visitation: The family will greet friends on Wednesday, September 23, 2020, at the Steen Funeral Home in Greenfield from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. 

Due to state and federal guidance on gatherings due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the family and funeral home requests masks must be worn and social distancing to be practiced. 

Memorials: The family requests no flowers and memorials may be directed to the Betty Smith memorial fund to be established at a later date. 

Betty Lou Smith was born May 7, 1935, the daughter of Lyle and Ruth (Kneller) Van Eaton near Richland, Iowa. She passed away on Saturday, September 19, 2020, at her home in Greenfield, Iowa, at the age of 85.

Betty attended grade and high school in Richland, Iowa and graduated in 1953. In July of 1955, she was united in marriage to Jim Smith. To this union two sons were born: Dan in 1955 and David in 1960. After their marriage Betty worked at the Orient Locker and then at Place’s Department Store in Greenfield. She then began a career of home child care in their home for 40 plus years. She enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Dan on September 2, 1986 from a motorcycle accident in Montrose, Colorado; brother, Burton Van Eaton; and brother-in-law, Keith Nielsen.

She is survived by her husband, Jim Smith of Greenfield; son, David Smith of Greenfield; sister, Patty Nielsen of Kansas City, Kansas; many nieces, nephews; other relatives and friends.
