Calvin Francis McCurdy was born August 25, 1927, in Cumberland, Iowa, the son of Walter William and Grace E. (Brown) McCurdy.  He passed away on Friday, September 2, 2022, at the Creston Specialty Care in Creston, Iowa, at the age of 95.

Cal grew up on a farm south of Cumberland and graduated from Cumberland High School.  He served his country in the United State Navy from 1945 to 1946.  On April 22, 1950, he was united in marriage to Wilma Irene Palma in Omaha, Nebraska.  To this union four children were born: Linda, Mike, Jerry and Karen.  They lived on a farm south of Cumberland for nine years.  In 1959, they bought the farm southeast of Massena, where Cal resided until September of 2021.

Cal was very proud of his service in the Navy and his baseball playing days.  It always brought him joy to tell stories of both, but his family and his love of the land in farming was most important.  He loved all sports, fishing, farming and especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Cal was a member of the St. Timothy’s Catholic Church (Reno) and Williamson American Legion Post No. 719.  He was a past member for the  Cumberland Red Sox, Massena Muskrats, Cal’s Clowns (softball), Billy Mac Wolfpack (until he was 60 years old).

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Wilma; grandson, Dustin; brothers, Leo, Cecil and Walter McCurdy; sisters, Mabel Schrier, Edna Piearson, Wilma Geary and Eleanor Kraack; and daughter-in-law, Deb McCurdy.

He is survived by his four children, Linda Reineke (Don) of Massena, Mike McCurdy (Sandy) of Bridgewater, Jerry McCurdy of Cumberland and Karen Bower (Kevin) of Polk City, Iowa; nine grandchildren; twenty-one great grandchildren; sister, Marjorie Adair of Missouri; other relatives and friends.
