Doris Cleone Cannon Schmidt was born in Sioux City, Iowa, on January 3, 1928. She passed away on December 9, 2013. As a teenager growing up in Iowa, she sang on a radio program on station KJAN. She was an athlete in high school and an avid golfer for 50 years.

Dory’s first husband, Stanley Cox, passed away when he was only 27. To that union were born two children, Julie Cox Laumer (Johnny Roberts) and Jeff Cox (Carol). Dory’s second husband was Bob Grayson. They had a daughter, Jill Grayson Kirkman.

Six grandchildren were born to her three children: Katie Mabry, Bonnie Mabry, Michelle Jones, Stephanie Cox, Sam Kirkman and Nick Kirkman. There are seven great grandchildren: Ty and Tyson McFarlin, Trevon Clemons, Bailey Mabry, Javen and James Jones and Kaila Milliron.

In 1974, Dory and Verne Schmidt were married. They would have celebrated their 40th anniversary this coming May.

Dory loved to write and wrote articles for a farm newspaper about husband and wife golf tournaments. She and Verne golfed in 24 out of 25 Iowa State Golf Couples’ Tournaments.

Playing bridge, cards and board games were some of Dory’s favorite hobbies in addition to singing and golfing.

Every Christmas, Dory would get together with friends to sing Christmas carols to organizational groups. Dory would sing at the drop of a hat.

Survivors are her husband, Verne Schmidt; son, Jeff Cox; daughters, Julie Laumer and Jill Kirkman; six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
