Duane Nels Dickerson was born September 1, 1947 in Red Oak, Iowa to Clifford William Dickerson and Goldie Darlene (Jensen) Dickerson. Duane was the fourth child in a family of nine children. When he was three years old, his father was killed in a truck accident and his mother moved their young family from Villisca to Fontanelle.

Duane attended elementary school in Fontanelle and graduated in 1965 from Bridgewater-Fontanelle High School. He married Linda Marie Corey in August 1966 at the Greenfield United Methodist Church. In August they would have celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary. Born to this union were four children: Scott Duane, Tina Marie, Bryan Douglas, and Teresa Corey.

He was a volunteer fireman for 39 years (1970-2009). He played basketball, softball, and bowled on a Tuesday night league for many years (bowling 268 one night). He was a member of the United Methodist Church, active with the men’s group baking pancakes on Easter mornings, and serving as a Trustee. Duane was always helping with church youth group trips, Girl and Boy Scout activities, Indian Guides, church dinners, and any other events his family involved him with. He was an Earth Team Volunteer for the USDA. He participated in the bloodmobile for many years (10 gallon club).

Duane worked forty-four years for five different telephone companies – all in Greenfield from 1966 until he retired in 2010. He was known as the friendly and helpful telephone repairman.

Duane liked the Iowa Hawkeyes and Coca Cola; he loved working in his yard, playing in his garage, putting together puzzles, watching television, and traveling. He and Linda loved going for drives and just enjoying the countryside and nature.

His greatest joys were his children and ten grandchildren. He was a kind and loving parent and a devoted and PATIENT husband.

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister Donna Mae, brother Richard, sister-in-law Janice Dickerson, and parents-in-law, Otis and Doris Corey.

Those left to cherish his memory are Linda and children, Scott (wife Janice) and their sons Brady and Beau; Tina Dickerson-Hochwender (friend Matt Hancock) and her children Caitlin Verrillo (husband Will) and Ian; Bryan (wife Becky) and their sons Zachary, Matthew, and Ethan; and Teresa Stakey (husband Adam) and their children Olivia, Whitney, and James; brothers Jim Dickerson (friend Linda Van Eaton), Randy Dickerson (wife Sherry), Mike Sickles (wife Keri), and Ronnie Sickles (wife Kellie); his sisters Kathryn Christensen (husband David) and Diana Warnaca; sister-in-law Tammy Dickerson; sister-in-law Janelle and husband Terry Schneider; brother-in-law Douglas Corey; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
