Jack Wayne Brown, Sr. was born September 10, 1941, Jackson Township, Adair County, Iowa, the son of Harold and Mary Thelma (Bond) Brown. He passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, May 10, 2024, at the age of 82.

Jack grew up in the Bridgewater/Fontanelle area. He attended country school and in 1959 he graduated from Fontanelle High School.

On January 30, 1959, Jack married the love of his life, Barbara Marie Casey at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Massena, Iowa. To this union, sixteen children were born, 8 boys and 8 girls. They later gained a bonus son, Daryl. They raised their family in the Fontanelle area.

Jack truly was a jack-of-all-trades. He could bake a pie like no other, deliver a baby, and patch a skinned knee or broken leg. He was a great woodsmith, welder, and mechanic. Jack built the family everything from a beautiful hand crafted cradle for family use, to a heavy duty wood splitter and both were used a lot. Jack loved coon hunting and running dogs with friends, deer hunting with the Scanlans, and fishing with whoever wanted to go. He loved the races, especially watching his nephew, John. Jack had many jobs, the first was as a farm hand, then Schildberg’s, the Newton Prison 12-Step Program, and owned his own dirt work and metal scrapping business.

Jack and Barb enjoyed many things together. They enjoyed mixed league bowling and taking kids to rodeos. They spent many years hauling the boys and friends to wrestling meets. Five of their boys wrestled  in the state tournament.

They excelled at cooking together, gardening, going to garage sales, and playing cards. They went to college together, earning degrees in Human Services with an endorsement in Chemical Dependency. But most of all they loved spending time with family and friends. They were rich in friends like Jimmy Miller, Albert Eshelman, Bill Scanlan, Betty Edwards, Mollie Lamborn, Raedeen Bigelow, the Scanlan and Miller families, and so many more.

After Barb entered eternal rest in July of 2001, Jack spent his time with family and friends. He went on his yearly fishing trips. He also became an instructor for the Adair County Hot Shots 4-H Club. Jack built the funnel cake fryer for the 4-H Club, and spent many years making funnel cakes at the Adair County Fair.

Jack is survived by his children: (1) Jack W. Brown Jr., of Stuart, (2) Jodie (Curt) Hoadley of Orient, (3) Allen (Hilary) Brown of Prole, (4) Janie (Chad) Rasmussen of Long Grove, (5) Tim Brown of Orient, (6) Daryl (Kori) Newbury of Greenfield, (7) Mary Thompson of Council Bluffs, (8) Richard (Dani) Brown of Maxwell, (9) Justin (Christina) Brown of Guthrie Center, (10) Lisa (Cody) Clark of Pleasant Hill, (11) Bill (Becca) Brown of Spearfish, SD, (12) Jessica (Jeremy) Hall of Fontanelle, (13) Jamie (Dwight) Saylor of Adel, (14) Jake (Marissa) Brown of Urbandale; Grandchildren: (1) Jack Andrew, Nakia (Matt), Mariah, (2) Sieanna, Autumn (Aaron), Tony (Hannah), Kale, (3) Nick (Samantha), Spencer (Kelsey), (4) Heather (Jake), Johnathan, Cody (Katy), Casey, (5) Kooper (Baylie), Kerigan, Brynn, (6) Payge (Jordan), Colton (Shea), McKynli, McKynna, Abigayle, (7) Mark, Liz (Billy), Emma, (8) Shayla, Lincoln, Winter, (9) Quest, Chance, Delanie, Andle, Bradley, (10) Kennady (Tom), Kamren, Tatum, (11) Hunter, Kirsten, Calista, Lacey, Hailee, Dylan, Kason, (12) Laila, Lennox, Gabriel, (14) Nora, Madeline; Great Grandchildren: (1) Vada, Gideon (2) Skyler, Zayden, Storm, Jemma, Remi, Chaos, Koen (3) Raleigh, Pierce, (4) Artemis, Raegan, Calum, (5) Hudson, (6) Sloan, Charly.
