LaVerne Schmidt

LaVerne Eugene Schmidt passed away on February 11, 2021 at age 93 in Fontanelle, Iowa. 

LaVerne was born June 4, 1927 in Sterling, Nebraska. He was the son of Brunke George Schmidt and Martha Caroline Hauptmeier Schmidt. The family moved to Greenfield, Iowa in 1943 where he graduated from Greenfield High School at age 15. 

Mr. Schmidt farmed north of Greenfield until 1954 when he moved his family to Red Oak, Iowa where he practiced accounting, earned his CPA certification and became a partner in the Dutton & Schmidt CPA firm. In 1964 the family relocated to Atlantic, Iowa where he opened an office for the firm and practiced accounting there for several years. In1973 he was appointed to the Board of Directors for the Iowa Society of Certified Public Accountants. He retired from accounting at age 67 and in 1995 moved to Lake Viking in Gallitan, Missouri to be nearer his children. He and his wife Doris enjoyed spending winter months at their home in Pharr, TX. They later moved to Greenfield, IA. His hobbies included playing golf and riding his motorcycle. 

Mr. Schmidt was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Schmidt, his brothers Marlin Schmidt & Wilmer Schmidt, his daughter Carolyn Peterson and great-grandson Liam Peterson. He is survived by his sister, Rae Jean Murphy (Frank) of Greenfield, daughter Christine Schmidt Savage (Bob), of Blacksburg, Virginia, son David Schmidt of Grain Valley, Missouri, son-in-law Wes Peterson of Breckenridge, Missouri, grandsons Scott Peterson (Natalie), Jay Peterson (Lindsay), Benjamin Savage, and Brian Savage, great-grandchildren Jackson Peterson and Jillian Peterson, and numerous nieces and nephews. 

The Steen Funeral Home in Greenfield is in charge of the professional arrangements. 

Celebration of Life Services Will Be Held At A Later Date.
