Funeral Services: Will be held on Wednesday, September 6, 2017, at 1:30 p.m. at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Fontanelle with burial in the Greenfield Cemetery. A luncheon will be held at the church following the committal services at the cemetery. Pastor Steven Broers will officiate the service. 

Open Visitation: Will be held on Tuesday at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Fontanelle from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. 

Family Visitation: Will be held on Tuesday at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Fontanelle from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. 

Memorials: Memorials may be made to the Marian Herr memorial fund to be established by the family.

Marian Elizabeth (Umbaugh) Herr was born on November 8, 1927 in Des Moines, Iowa to parents, Phillip Rance Umbaugh and Ella Marian (Curry) Umbaugh. She grew up in Des Moines, Iowa, and a farm near Dexter, Iowa, with one brother, Philip A. Umbaugh. She was baptized March 11, 1928 by Evangelical Lutheran Pastor Malvin H. Lundeen in Des Moines. She was confirmed January 21, 1951 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Fontanelle, Iowa, by Pastor Paul C. Lutz. Marian attended country school kindergarten through 8th grade at Harrison #6 and graduated from Winterset High School. She attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa, completed her four-year degree at Drake University. She taught country school at Harrison #6, Randall School District, Summerset #7, Bridgewater-Fontanelle Community School District and Orient-Macksburg Community School District.

On August 7, 1949 she married Walter Paul Herr at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Fontanelle, Iowa. Walter and Marian made their first home on a farm south of Fontanelle and later moved to a farm south of Greenfield. They became the parents of Barbara Sue, Paula Kay, Marcia Jane and Paul Walter. Marian enjoyed farm life, homemaking, teaching school, raising her children, reading, playing the piano, teaching Sunday school and Bible school. She enjoyed her church circle, Bible study group and her membership in Alpha Delta Kappa Educational Sorority. She supported her children in church, school, sports and 4-H activities.

Marian was preceded in death by her parents, Phillip R. Umbaugh and Ella Marian (Curry) Umbaugh; her in-laws, John C. Herr and Christina (Ehm) Herr; her brother, Philip A. Umbaugh; two granddaughters, Kelly Kay Bachhuber and Sara Elizabeth McKibban; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law William and Opal Herr, Gilbert and Darlene Herr and Irene and Wayne Tilk.

She is survived by her husband, Walter Paul Herr; her children Barbara (Steve) McKibban of Greenfield; Paula (Jack) Bachhuber of Urbandale; Marcia (John) Plett of Gladbrook and Paul (Virginia) Herr of Fontanelle; her grandchildren, Stephanie Fenster; Brian (Kristen) McKibban; Brock (Karlee) McKibban; Jason (Rami) Bachhuber; Nicole (Chris) Novak; Michael (Lindsay) Plett; Matthew (Kassaundra) Plett; Alyse (Daniel) Dreher; Rachel (Kelly) Hall and Susan Herr; her great-grandchildren, Carson, Cade and Colby Fenster; Braydon, Leighton and Madison McKibban; Isla and Felix McKibban; Blake and Baby Novak; Ellis and Nev Bachhuber; Emerie Plett; Cora Plett; Alexis Dreher and Dean Hall; sister-in-law Maxine Umbaugh, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
