Funeral Services: Will be held on Friday, June 28, 2013, at 1:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Greenfield with burial in the Greenfield Cemetery. Rev. Dr. Keith Schweitzer will officiate the service.   

Visitation: Will be held on Thursday, June 27th, at the Greenfield United Methodist Church from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m. 

Memorials: To the Adair County Historical Society or to the Greenfield Public Library. 

Mildred Evelyn Bowen was born October 5, 1919 in Lee Township, Adair County, Greenfield, Iowa to Oren C. (Dick) and Lula M. (Shanklin) Bowen. She passed away Monday, June 24, 2013 at the Adair County Memorial Hospital in Greenfield, Iowa at the age of 93.

She attended country school at Lee No. 4 and graduated from the eighth grade in 1933. She was baptized and became a member of the Clara Chapel Methodist Church in Grove Township October 21, 1934. Mildred was a Sunday School teacher at the Clara Chapel Church and Grove Center, also organized and taught Bible School at both churches. When Clara Chapel burned in July of 1961 they organized with Grove Center and was known as Grove Chapel. In January 28, 1979 she received a membership with Greenfield United Methodist Church under Pastor Rev. Hohl, and attended church faithfully.

Mildred was a member of the Rural Improvement Club, Inquisitors, Adair County board member of the American Cancer Society for many years, secretary of the Adair County Historical Society for sixteen years and also volunteered on many organizations drives.

Mildred worked for many families as a sitter and care giver. She enjoyed many children in helping to raise them. They all were very special to her. She could tell a story about each one. She worked for the Albert Erbes and Chuck Frederick families for a number of years. She worked at the Greenfield Public Library for 10 years and volunteered at the Heritage Center Museum.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Robert and Chester; two sisters, Thelma as an infant and Amelia Brockman; three sister-in-laws; one brother-in-law; two nephews; three grand nephews and two grand nieces.

Mildred is survived by her brother, Donald R. Bowen of Odessa, Texas; three nieces, Joy Standley (Larry), Betty Fetcher (Lynn), and Nancy Nowak (Gene); three nephews, Gaylord (Obie) Bowen (Susan), Jessey Bowen (Fonda) and Jeff Bowen (Celia); several great, great-great, and great-great-great grand-nieces and nephews, and many friends.
