Funeral Services: Will be held on Thursday, August 25, 2016, at 10:30 a.m. at the Pine Grove United Methodist Church north of Massena with burial in the Evergreen Cemetery in Anita. A luncheon will be held at the Anita Community Center in Anita following the burial. 

Open Visitation: Will be held on Wednesday, August 24th, at the Steen Funeral Home in Massena from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. 

Family Visitation: The family will greet friends on Wednesday, August 24th, at the Steen Funeral Home in Massena from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. 

Memorials: May be directed to the Nina Walters memorial fund to be established by the family. 

Survivors: She is survived by her children, Mardell Peek and husband Chuck of Oakland, Melva Lund of Anita and Galen Walters and wife Deb of Anita; 24 grandchildren; 69 great grandchildren; 6 great great grandchildren; brother-in-law, Eddie Holdsworth of Arcadia, Iowa; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Nina Leona Walters was born November 15, 1921, in Harlan, Iowa, the daughter of Nels and Anna (Rasmussen) Sorensen. She passed away on Saturday, August 20, 2016, at the Caring Acres Nursing and Rehab Center in Anita, Iowa, at the age of 94.

Nina was raised in rural Harlan and attended rural country school thru the 8th grade. On September 30, 1941, she was united in marriage to Verner R. Walters in Maryville, Missouri. To this union four children were born: Marsha, Mardell, Melva and Galen. She worked at a bakery and restaurant while Verner was in the Army then they farmed in the Kimballton area until 1953 then they made their home in Anita, Iowa.

Nina attended Pine Grove United Methodist Church where she served as treasurer until the church closed. She was a 4-H leader, Sunday School and Bible School teacher and was a member of the ladies aide group. She enjoyed cooking, baking, canning, sewing and quilting. Nina was a cook at the Redwood Steakhouse from 1970-2010. She loved every minute of her job and was dearly missed when she retired.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Verner in 1993; daughter, Marsha Hartman; granddaughter, Michaela Walters; son-in-law, Ivyn Lund; six sisters; five brothers; three sisters-in-law and three brothers-in-law.

She is survived by her children, Mardell Peek and husband Chuck of Oakland, Melva Lund of Anita and Galen Walters and wife Deb of Anita; 24 grandchildren; 69 great grandchildren; 6 great great grandchildren; brother-in-law, Eddie Holdsworth of Arcadia, Iowa; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
