Pamela Ann (See) Mathiews was born in Fairfield, Iowa on July 25, 1947, to Viola (Hotchkiss) See and Edward See.  She passed away on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, at her home near Orient, Iowa, at the age of 76.

Pam, the youngest of 4, grew up on the east side of Des Moines where she attended Tech High School and graduated in 1965.  She remained living in Des Moines while working for Employers Mutual Insurance Company. It was during this time, while attending a dance with her friend, Pam met the love of her life. On May 30th, 1975, she was united in marriage to Leonard Earl Mathiews at the First United Methodist Church in downtown Des Moines. Together they made their home near Orient, where they welcomed and raised their 3 sons: Lee, Larry, and Lance. Through the years, the family enjoyed the company of Earl’s oldest son, Len, who would visit from North Carolina, In 1988, after staying home to raise her children, Pam began working at the Greenfield Pizza Hut. It was there, her nurturing personality was shared with everyone she met, and she quickly became known as “mom” to many. Pam eventually retired when the restaurant closed in 2009 and spent the rest of her years actively involved in the lives of her grandchildren. She spoke often of how much she enjoyed navigating the world of girls after having raised boys.

Pam was a woman of unwavering faith and while following its teachings, she shared her religion with family and friends. Her grandchildren have fond memories of her singing “Jesus Loves Me” when they were young, and they enjoyed singing along as they got older. She regularly attended services, frequently with her grandchildren in tow, at the First Baptist Church in Creston and enjoyed helping with vacation bible school.  She also actively participated in the neighborhood bible study group.

Pam’s favorite place to be was with her family. She especially loved her grandchildren and never missed an opportunity to attend their events or simply spend time together playing with barbies, painting fingernails, or playing card games. She was an active member of both the Adair County Hospital Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary, as well as a past member of the Optimist Club in Greenfield. When she wasn’t with family, she enjoyed genealogy, taking long walks and refinishing furniture. She also spent many years volunteering her time with hospice patients through Care Initiatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Viola and Edward See; brother, Dennis See; and sister, Sandra Sue Wakefield.

She is survived by her husband, Earl Mathiews of Orient; four sons, Len Mathiews (Connie) of Newport, N.C., Lee Mathiews (Brandi Schmitt) of Atlantic, Larry Mathiews (Jessica) of Orient and Lance Mathiews (Sarah) of Orient; ten grandchildren, Michael, Emanuel, Kaleb, Kourtnie, Everly, Aliyah, Payton, Cameron (Ashlee), Cameo and Chase; three great grandchildren, Renlee, Avery, and Kayleigh; sister, Shirley Curry of San Bernardino, CA; other relatives and friends.
