Richard "Dick" Schneider, 90, of Greenfield

Celebration of Life Services: Will be held on Monday, July 28, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at the Greenfield United Methodist Church with burial in the Greenfield Cemetery. Full military graveside rites will be conducted by the Greenfield American Legion Head-Endres Post No. 265 and V.F.W. Post No. 5357 and the Army Funeral Honor Guard. A luncheon will follow the burial back at the church. Pastor Melinda Stonebraker will officiate the service. The Lamb Funeral Home in Greenfield is in charge of the professional arrangements. Family Visitation: The family will greet friends on Sunday, July 27, 2025, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Greenfield United Methodist Church.

Memorials: Memorials may be directed to the Dick Schneider Memorial Fund to be established by the family at a later date.

Richard (Dick) Eugene Schneider, son of Wilbert (Butch) and Alice Schneider, was born in Greenfield, Iowa on September 9, 1934. He passed away on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at the Creston Specialty Care in Creston, Iowa, at the age of 90.

Dick spent his childhood in Greenfield attending school at Greenfield Public Schools, graduating with the class of 1952. On October 1, 1955. Dick and Vera Sackett of Greenfield were married at St. John’s Catholic in Greenfield after Dick returned from the service. To this union four children were born: Gerry, Terry, Cindy and Pam. Dick and Vera lived in their family home in Greenfield most of their lives from 1962 through 2021 when they moved to Creston.

After graduation, Dick worked as a carpenter with his father and brothers, then began working for Schildberg Garage as a mechanic. He enlisted for the Army in 1953 where he served for 14 months in Germany. He liked to tell the story of how he was in Berlin behind the Iron Curtain. During his service he was very proud that he received the Soldier of the Week award for his entire regiment.

After he returned from the Army, Dick worked again in carpentry with his father and brothers and later worked for Schildberg’s where he moved out to the Quarry and operated the first loader they owned. In 1973, he went to work for Adair County where he drove a road maintainer until he retired in 1996.

Dick enjoyed many hobbies after he retired. He was an avid gardener and canned all kinds of vegetables from his gardens. He enjoyed cooking and often watched cooking shows on TV to refine his skills. He especially liked to use his smoker to feed family and friends at gatherings. He continued with carpentry, becoming a skilled woodworker making rocking horses and motorcycles for his grandkids. He picked up deer hunting and went on many fishing trips to North Dakota with his brother, Bill. Dick and Vera also enjoyed camping at local parks in Iowa and traveling around the country in retirement. He also mowed for the cemetery.

Dick was a member of Veteran of Foreign Wars and American Legion. He also volunteered as a member of the Greenfield Fire Department for many years.

Dick had a tough cookie attitude, but he was devoted to his family and friends. He created a tradition of granting each of his grandkids nicknames that he proudly used to call them. He cared for elderly members of his family and loved telling jokes and stories to anyone who'd listen.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents, wife Vera, son-in-law Jeff Bricker, and granddaughters Jessica Schneider and Kaylee Stovall.

He is survived by son Terry Schneider (Janelle) of Greenfield, daughters Gerry Sheriff (Bruce) of Greenfield, Cindy Stovall (Kevin) of Lee’s Summit MO, and Pam Schwinger (Rob) of Independence KS, special friend Radine Ward of Creston IA, brothers William (Donna) and Joe (Lorraine), and sister Carolyn Combs, grandchildren Joshua Schneider (Heather), Lisa Acheson (Shay), Chad Stovall, Joel Bricker (Carolyn), and Jamie Bricker (McKinzie), great-grandchildren Wyatt (Emma) Schneider, Parker Schneider, Gabrielle Bricker, and Lane Bricker, plus many step-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
