Funeral Services: Will be held on Friday, December 12, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Fontanelle with a luncheon immediately following the service. Burial will follow the luncheon in the Canby Cemetery north of Fontanelle. The Lamb Funeral Home in Greenfield is in charge of the professional arrangements. Family Visitation: The family will greet friends on Friday, December 12, 2025, at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Fontanelle from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
Memorials: To the Sylvia Cooper Memorial Fund to be established by the family.
Sylvia Christine Cooper was born on September 10, 1930, the daughter of Ernest P. and Lizzie (Lorenz) Baudler in Fontanelle, Iowa. She passed away on Thursday, December 4, 2025, at the Community Care Center in Stuart, Iowa, at the age of 95.
Sylvia grew up in Jackson Township north of Fontanelle and completed the 8th grade at a little red schoolhouse, which still stands north of Fontanelle. On August 13, 1950, she was united in marriage to Leon Walter Cooper in the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Fontanelle. They farmed north of Fontanelle until 1958 when they bought a farm south of Adair. There they raised five children, Becky, Ralph, Ivan, Bonny and David.
Sylvia loved her chickens and had raised laying hens, broilers and pullets. She had a large garden and helped on the farm. She loved to travel and in later years during their snowbird years they worked in Mesa Verde National Park and picked apples in Washington state. She enjoyed helping Leon in his handy man business throughout the years. Sylvia and Leon loved to dance and play cards. She was an aggressive aggravation player. She taught summer Bible school at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church and had served as an officer for Farm Bureau Women’s Organization.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Ralph, Henry, Louis, Bernard, and Virgil; sister, Wilma; husband, Leon; son, David; daughter, Becky Ingram; son-in-law, John Ingram; daughters-in-law, Penny Cooper and Lori Cooper; and grandson, Chad Leon Cooper; brothers and sisters-in-law; and a niece.
She is survived by her two sons, Ralph Cooper of Adair and Ivan Cooper of Kingsville, Missouri; daughter, Bonny Readinger (Dan) of Guthrie Center; thirteen grandchildren; thirty-one great grandchildren; thirteen great great grandchildren; sister, Ruth Hendersen (Wayne) of Greenfield; sisters-in-law, Betty Baudler, Ruth Baudler and Carol Baudler all of Fontanelle; and the many relatives and friends whose lives she touched.
