William "Bill" Henry Scanlan was born in rural Adams co. about 3 and 1/2 miles from Corning. He was the 4th. of 7 brothers and 3 sisters. He passed away on Sunday, December 3, 2023, at his home. He went to a near by rural schoolhouse until the rural school was united with Corning Community school, there by finishing his high school in town. After school he worked for a time helpng his father with farm work, other nearby farmers, and Earl May in their fields.
William married the love of his life, Joy Rae South, on June 6, 1964 at St. John's Catholic Church in Greenfield, Iowa. To this union two children were born; Christie Rae Scanlan, on December 21, 1964 and Angela Rae Scanlan on October 15, 1969. But thier family was not done yet. In 1975 Mark Ray Scanlan born June 21, 1967 and Donna RaeJean Scanlan February 17, 1969 were adopted and added to the family.
William worked for Schildberg Construction (rock quarry) for 33 years and ran a heavy equipment shovel, but mostly was a driller, and cat and scraper operator. He liked the drilling more than the many other things he did in the quarry. Joy tells people that he liked to blow things up. He certainly did do that.
Bill has always been a hunter. Of course, he could never miss a deer season, while his body would allow, or a night out with Jack to run the dogs searching for coons.
Bill and God, with the help of Bill's good and longtime friend, Jack Brown performed a miracle when he moved the Big House down to our property from the neighbors hill top, where it had been built many years before. It has been an extremely difficult time and many years to remodel it but it is a job well done.
After retirement Bill worked for Walmart in Creston, Iowa for 5 years starting in 2005, and after retiring again, the two of them spent the winter in Texas and Arizona. They visited family and toured the country side, the Grand Canyon, went to Mexico to do some shopping, and saw many wonderful sights.
Saddness gripped the family when their daughter Donna passed away on June 6th, 2023 after being married for about a month to her husband, Richard Lafeber. Donna had two sons pass way at birth; Ryan Ray Scanlan and Luke Michael Thompson.
Surviving Bill are his wife, Joy, and children, Christie (David Kindt), Mark (Brenda) Scanlan, Angela (Jon Goldsmith); 12 Grandchildren: Megan (Dan Fox), Heather Bremmer, Madison Thompson, Tyler and Chad Kind, Tonie (Leon Walker), Austin (Aziah) and Trenton Scanlan, Oakley and Colton Goldsmith, Kelsi Reinoso, and Colton Blay.
